2 Easy to Watercolor Mushroom Cards + Video

Oopsie Alert: Sometimes things just do not go to plan. Well, for me it is almost expected! I had a bit of a mishap with one of the cards and had to come up with a solution to keep on keeping on. Can you tell which card had the mishap? I bet not… you’ll just have to watch the video to find out.

There is just something about mushrooms. I avoided them like the plague growing up. If my mom even dared to make the Thanksgiving green bean casserole with cream of mushroom soup, I’d have a meltdown. I don’t think I even allowed it in the pantry for fear of someone trying to sneak cream of mushroom soup into something. Now, I love them. In all their forms and uses.

I’m feeling fallish (or maybe dreaming of fall in this 110+ heat) and went with a mushroom theme for this month’s sentiment kit. I’ve always wanted a mushroom kit, so it finally happened and I hope you love it as much as I do.

The Cards

Have you ever googled mushrooms? Most are shades of brown and tan and then there are the COLORFUL ones. Nature is so amazing. For my set of cards, I decided to let my pattern paper lead me in the direction of my mushroom colors. I picked out the patterns I liked and then selected 3 Distress ink colors to match: Evergreen Bough, Fossilized Amber, and Fired Brick.

Technique Tip: You can watercolor with any water-reactive dye ink! My go-to brands are Gina K and Distress Inks but there are lots of beautiful brands of ink out there you can watercolor with. Just test them out on a scratch piece of watercolor paper.

Card #1: A Masculine Birthday Card

While this stamp set does not contain a birthday sentiment, many of Unity sentiment kits do. Don’t forget you can always mix and match sentiments from any of the kits. Lots of times I like to plan how the sentiment kits could be used with each other as I’m designing them. I have lots of combination secrets hidden in the kits that my brain thinks up.

Both of these designs are great for a masculine card. The colors and patterns are not too “girly”. Even though there is a bow, I don’t think men hate bows. The burlap string is rustic and creates a great texture that compliments the nature feeling of the card.

Design Tip: Take a tiny sentiment and repeat stamp over your image. It adds a collage-type feel and can customize any image for the occasion you want it to be.

Card #2: Choosing a Different Path

This sentiment “Choosing a different path does not make you lost.” was the start of this kit and it is a great reminder that sometimes life leads you in a new direction. That does not mean a path doesn’t exist, you just might not know what it is yet.

Design tip: Pattern paper is so fun to play with… I’ve layered them in different shapes and sizes for both cards. Just by changing the layout, you get a completely different feel to the card using the same supplies.

Bonus Tip: Go crazy with your mushroom colors! Who says they have to be brown or tan? They can be purple, blue or pink! What I love about the crafty world is that you can allow nature to lead you or make your own decision on what color your mushrooms should be in your world.
