2 Not So Traditional Distress Oxide Color Combos for Christmas Cards + Video

I’m slowly starting to build up my holiday card stash, have you started yet? Today, I’m trying 2 unique Distress Oxide color combos on both kraft and white cardstock to create fun backgrounds. I’m sharing my process on how to get different looks by ink blending and ink smooshing. It was something new for me to try and hopefully it will inspire you to try something new too.

I’m breaking some of the sentiments from the newest Unity Stamp Company sentiment kit – Merriest Wishes Darling to create a set of colorful Christmas cards.

The Cards

The Details

I really love to create with backgrounds. Either using a background stamp or stamping to create my background. I’m only using the sentiments from Merriest Wishes Darling so it has a very typographical and graphic feel.

I pulled out some Distress Oxide inks and combined 2 unique color combos for Christmas. The classic red and green always makes an appearance for Christmas but I decided to mix things up. I’m also trying something new by seeing how they would look on both kraft and white cardstock. Kinda diggin’ it.

Color Combo #1

Prize Ribbon • Pine Needles • Fossilized Amber

I grabbed a blending brush and blended this combo on some white cardstock. I am using the reinkers so it would probably be easier with the ink pads but dang, the coverage is amazing. I’m not used to the matte look with Distress Oxides but it is growing on me. Once all the panels were dry, I added some white ink spatters.

Tip: Use up that leftover ink! After I had squeezed out the reinkers on my laminated palette, I didn’t want to just throw all that ink away. I sprayed some water into the leftovers and smooshed a piece of kraft cardstock to pick up all that ink. I’ve never ink smooshed on kraft but I’m liking it!

Color Combo #2

Salvaged Patina • Peeled Paint • Worn Lipstick

Tip: Try ink blending on kraft. So after the ink smooshing went so well with the kraft, I decided to reverse the process and ink blend on the kraft first. I love the different look the kraft creates especially with the water splatters.

Then I ink smooshed with the white cardstock to utilize the leftover ink. I’m curious about which look you like best.
